Het pediatrisch onderzoek vooruithelpen: innovatie omarmen en uitmuntendheid ondersteunen

Het HUDERF/UKZKF (Universitair Kinderziekenhuis Koningin Fabiola), opgericht in 1986 en sinds 2021 onderdeel van het H.U.B. (Universitair Ziekenhuis van Brussel), is het enige Belgische universitair ziekenhuis dat zich uitsluitend toelegt op kindergeneeskunde, in samenwerking met de Vrije Universiteit Brussel (ULB). Het HUDERF/UKZKF is ontworpen voor kinderen en hun gezinnen en biedt complete zorg vanaf de geboorte tot de adolescentie, waarbij het zich houdt aan het handvest van de rechten van gehospitaliseerde kinderen. Als medisch-chirurgische instelling met 183 bedden zet het zich in voor het leveren van hoogwaardige, geavanceerde en voor iedereen toegankelijke gezondheidszorg. Als belangrijk lid van de H.U.B., een dynamische ziekenhuisgroep die het Jules Bordet Instituut en het Erasmeziekenhuis omvat, is dit pediatrisch centrum bijzonder goed gepositioneerd om zich verder te ontwikkelen, waarbij nieuwe synergieën, gedeelde waarden en een sterke innovatiecultuur worden bevorderd.

Tussen klinische zorg en wetenschappelijk onderzoek

Pediatrisch onderzoek staat centraal in de missie van het HUDERF/UKZKF en speelt een essentiële rol bij de uitbreiding van de medische kennis en de verbetering van de gezondheid en het welzijn van kinderen. Dit onderzoek, dat wordt uitgevoerd binnen een gespecialiseerde infrastructuur, overbrugt de kloof tussen klinische zorg en wetenschappelijke ontdekkingen en bevordert de ontwikkeling van nieuwe therapieën, diagnostische hulpmiddelen en preventieve strategieën die zijn afgestemd op de unieke behoeften van jonge patiënten. Dankzij rigoureuze studies en klinische proeven dragen onze onderzoekers voortdurend bij aan de verbetering van de pediatrische gezondheidszorg, waarbij ze ervoor zorgen dat kinderen de meest innovatieve en effectieve behandelingen krijgen die beschikbaar zijn.

Nu het HUDERF/UKZKF een nieuw hoofdstuk begint, staat het voor een reeks uitdagingen en kansen. Een nieuw strategisch onderzoeksplan, getiteld “Comprehensive Children's Hospital”, sluit aan bij de medische strategie en benadrukt de belangrijkste pijlers. 

Deze strategische richtlijnen verbinden het fundamenteel onderzoek van onze laboratoria met klinische toepassingen via samenwerkende ‘dreamteams’ van clinici en onderzoekers. Dit initiatief versterkt de bestaande banden van de HUB op het gebied van neurowetenschappen, oncofertiliteitszorg, cardiologie, pediatrische oncologie en andere vakgebieden. De samenwerking met het Europese Plotkin Instituut voor Vaccinologie is veelbelovend voor de ontwikkeling van pediatrische vaccins. Bovendien zijn er sterke banden gesmeed met BioPark, een door de ULB opgerichte incubator voor biomedische start-ups.

Renforcement des collaborations

Autres axes clés de travail : le renforcement des collaborations entre nos partenaires académiques et l'industrie pharmaceutique, le développement du « Réseau mère-enfant de la francophonie (RMEF) », la Société belge d'hématologie-oncologie pédiatrique (BSPHO) et les centres d'expertise du réseau européen pour des départements tels que l'hématologie et l'oncologie (ERN Paed-Can). Les partenariats s'étendent à d'autres institutions du réseau comme la clinique d'endocrinologie (Endo-ERN), la clinique métabolique (MetabERN), la clinique de génétique (ERN ITHACA) et le consortium francophone BRACE (Brussels Rare and Complex Epilepsies), reconnu comme membre à part entière de l'ERN pour les épilepsies rares et complexes (EpiCARE). Pleinement engagée dans la recherche translationnelle, l'HUDERF/UKZKF s'efforce de pérenniser ses plateformes technologiques, de favoriser un environnement collaboratif dynamique et interdisciplinaire et de maximiser la valeur des biobanques et des résultats de la recherche. Dans ce contexte, le rôle du Belgian Kids' Fund reste crucial et nous adressons nos plus sincères remerciements à l'association.

Les efforts collectifs des chercheurs talentueux, du personnel dévoué et du leadership visionnaire de l'HUDERF/UKZKF continueront sans aucun doute de repousser les limites de la lutte contre les maladies pédiatriques. La tradition d'excellence de l'HUDERF/UKZKF et son approche pionnière de la recherche interdisciplinaire en font une institution remarquable, prête à apporter des contributions encore plus importantes à la science médicale et à la société dans les années à venir.

Avec cette ambition en tête, nous nous engageons à faire en sorte que l'HUDERF/UKZKF reçoive le soutien indéfectible de la « famille H.U.B » et de ses cofondateurs, la Ville de Bruxelles et l'Université Libre de Bruxelles. Ensemble, nous visons à élever la qualité de la recherche, la plaçant au premier plan de l'excellence académique dans les années à venir.
