Founded in 1986 and integrated into the H.U.B. (Brussels University Hospital) in 2021, the HUDERF/UKZKF (Queen Fabiola Children’s University Hospital) is the only Belgian university hospital dedicated exclusively to pediatric medicine, affiliated with the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). Designed for children and their families, the HUDERF/UKZKF offers comprehensive care from birth through adolescence, adhering to the charter of rights for hospitalized children. As a 183-bed medical-surgical facility, it is committed to providing high-quality, state-of-the-art healthcare that is accessible to all. As a key member of the H.U.B., a dynamic hospital group that includes the Jules Bordet Institute and Erasme Hospital, this pediatric center is particularly well-positioned to grow, fostering new synergies, shared values, and a strong culture of innovation.

Between clinical care and scientific discovery

Pediatric research is at the heart of HUDERF/UKZKF’s mission, playing a vital role in advancing medical knowledge and improving children’s health and well-being. Conducted within a specialized infrastructure, this research bridges the gap between clinical care and scientific discovery, fostering the development of new therapies, diagnostic tools, and preventive strategies tailored to the unique needs of young patients. Through rigorous studies and clinical trials, our researchers continually contribute to the improvement of pediatric healthcare, ensuring that children receive the most innovative and effective treatments available.

As HUDERF/UKZKF embarks on a new chapter, it faces a range of challenges and opportunities. A new strategic research plan, titled “Comprehensive Children’s Hospital,” aligns with the medical strategy and highlights its key pillars.

These strategic priorities bridge the gap between the basic research conducted in our laboratories and clinical applications through collaborative “dream teams” of clinician-researcher pairs. This initiative strengthens the HUB’s existing ties in the fields of neuroscience, oncofertility, cardiology, pediatric oncology, and other areas. The collaboration with the Plotkin European Institute of Vaccinology holds promise for the development of pediatric vaccines. In addition, strong ties have been forged with BioPark, a biomedical startup incubator founded by ULB.
